A balanced combination

The early morning hours witnessed a balanced mixture as the sun wrestled with the cold breeze piercing our bodies before embarking on a new journey to spread colors in a new safe space.

Coming from a different mixture of languages and cultures, chats and laughs circulated in an extreme variation and in a refined integration at each other’s. And our journey began! We were three “leafers” from “I Leaf Art” Beirut joined by two “leafers” from Tripoli to complete a team resolved to create a singing space of colors and details for the opening of the Livelihood Center established by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in the area of Halba, Akkar caza, on the morning of Saturday, February 8th, 2014.

We reached the location at 8:30 in the morning and we quickly started moving our kits and tools. Shahed and Celine took their pencils and began drawing and building bridges between the silent wall and chattering fingers, while Celine took the camera to document the event and involve the other members of “I Leaf Art” team who couldn’t participate in this task. From my side, I was gladly helping Tania to empty the paint box just as if we were carrying Santa’s bag or a magical saucepan for cooking everlasting children stories.

A team from the host institution was moving around like busy soldiers in beehives, interacting with us through a coherent mixture of kindness and coordination: someone trying to provide some of the practical needs, another moving our kits and tools to the next room or bringing us some chairs and a table, and two others preparing for us some coffee...

We didn’t have the opportunity to meet and share our roles. However, we were deeply committed in a balanced combination leaving our intersecting fingers in that room without introductions. We started filling plastic cups with liquids coloring, alternating our pencils to complete the drawing, leaving our fingerprints in these coherent details.

We were occasionally soaking our pencils in that sole dignified water pot, adding a new plastic cup to promote the “pastel” colors, and diversity of the flavors and the quantities as if we were promising a feast lunch with each one having his own style so as to add ingredients and magical mixes to the pot.

Colors danced in our cups and pencils swayed in the drawing malleable folds as directed without resistance or laziness. We did not interact in the complexity of options and artistic backgrounds although we never had the chance to draw together previously. Yet, that balanced combination we witnessed that morning narrated our thoughts in an artistic molding and meaningful vision free from selfishness so as to become sparkling leafers of “I Leaf Art” team work.
Sometimes we move away from the wall to inspire new blends and sometimes we share ideas as to combine a hot and cold combination with every corner. We were accompanied with the roar of the cold wind hitting the window at times and piercing our bodies at other times, inviting it to come in and assist us drying the mural fast.

The hosting team was captured by our moves as if we were some musical notes going up and down in front of a constructive audience waiting for the conclusion of this piece of art. Suddenly Roshanne, from the hosting team, emerged from her silence and jumped into our theater declaring her desire to restore a sense of childhood as she picked a pencil between her palms with a coloring palette and a cup. Immerged by our welcoming participation for a moment, she began wandering about how to fill in the blanks, carry the brush and distribute the color in assigned fields.

The reality of being a mother could not hide her innocent smile as she launched her sense of humor with her shiny eyes, encouraged to ask for more and recognizing the joy of returning to a childhood she spent in Syria quite before the immediate crisis.

Hours passed quickly and the sun went down, leaving us with only a small light spot of the wall. We carried our luggage, shake hands with what remains of colors and left, with an echo of Roshanne’s voice in our ears promising to send us a bunch of letters and writings from the children who would visit the center after its opening.
